There’s a changing of the guard here at The Derby Conference Centre. Our new Managing Director, Matt Hutchings, has been with us for a number of months, and is now ready to step into the role to oversee the next chapter in our story.
Matt, who has been working in hospitality since the age of 16, will be taking over from Mike Ebbitt. For the last ten years, Mike has seen our Centre grow into the venue it is now. However, after 44 years in the industry, Mike feels that the time is now right for him to retire and enjoy more time with his family and on the golf course.
Mike has been at the forefront of driving the Centre forward, including transforming our building into a multi-purpose site complete with upgrading bedrooms and facilities, as well as obtaining Grade II listed status and receiving the Red Plaque from the Transport Trust.
Under Mike’s leadership, the Centre has expanded its services to offer weddings, Christmas parties, and various functions in our Sunken Lounge.
Mike himself says: “It’s been a wonderful time managing The Derby Conference Centre. I’m sad to be leaving of course but I’m really excited for my retirement and being able to spend more time with my family. The last 10 years have been like seeing a child develop into an adult in many ways – we’ve all come a long way during that time, with plenty of challenges of course, but I cannot express how proud I am of the team and how privileged to have worked with them all.”
Mike is proud to be passing the reins to Matt, who himself has opened two hotels himself and is excited at what lies ahead for us here at The Derby Conference Centre. Matt has spent the last few months learning all there is to know about our Centre from Mike – he couldn’t have asked for a better teacher!
“I have found that you cannot achieve success without investing in people, through development and engagement,” Matt says. “I’m really excited to inspire the fantastic team we have already at The Derby Conference Centre to think differently and engage them to begin a journey together in which we’ll evolve the Centre into the premier venue it can be. That potential is part of the reason why I was inspired to join The Derby Conference Centre.”
Matt has worked in several different roles across hospitality, ranging from team member all the way up to senior leader. In each role he’s held, Matt has recognised that it’s the people who make the difference for success. He’s keen to continue building on Mike’s vision for The Derby Conference Centre, with a similar focus on encouraging and motivating his team.
“Mike has given so much to The Derby Conference Centre,” Matt adds. “He’s been a great mentor to myself and I’m keen to continue his hard work. It’s been an honour and pleasure learning from him over the last few months – his knowledge is so valuable in everything we do here at the Centre.”
On behalf of everyone here at The Derby Conference Centre we’d like to wish Mike all the happiness in his retirement and we’re looking forward to seeing in a new era with Matt steering the ship.
